Frank, I want to go to the zoo. How do I make friends with the lions, tigers, and bears there?

You don’t. Just be very careful about what you do, what you say, and who you talk to. Be very careful about touching them, or getting too close.

Try not to leave food outside their cages — most of them prefer fresh, and can starve if it doesn’t arrive. Also, don’t talk about anything that isn’t completely neutral or positive (unless they like that sort of thing), and try to avoid being sarcastic or sarcastic-sounding.

Don’t try to start arguments with them or provoke them, or stand too close or too far away from them. If you do have to stand there, try not to move more than once every minute or so. (You can ask us to repeat ourselves and give us time to actually process the previous sentence.)

This is the basic script for most zoos. The most fun and most exciting things to do are obviously going to be more along the lines of actually getting a close-up view of one of them, or maybe giving one a piece of food. This is more of an advanced skill than the other advice (which is why we gave you so much more of it).

Thanks, Frank! What about the aquarium? Do you think it’s a better idea to try making friends with the fish?

As long as the fish haven’t noticed you and made a plan to eat you, they’ll probably be happy to see you. The best place to find out whether they like you is the aquarium.

Sounds like a plan, I’ll keep my distance from the tank walls. Thank you!
